The total number of e-cigarette consumers in Russia in 2024 increased by 19%, to 5.3 million people, according to data from the analytical service of the audit and consulting network FinExpertiza, prepared for TASS.
According to the service, in the Magadan region and in Chukotka, 51% of all smokers prefer electronic cigarettes. In Moscow, this share is 38.2%, in the Volgograd Region - 32.4%, in the Astrakhan Region - 27.4%, in St. Petersburg - 27.2%, in the Sverdlovsk Region - 27%, in Sevastopol - 25.4%, in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug - 25.3% and in the Novgorod Region - 24.9%. The smallest proportion of electronok smokers is recorded in Chechnya, North Ossetia, Ingushetia and Kalmykia, where the zero proportion among all nicotine addicts is recorded. Also in Karachay-Cherkessia, the number of e-cigarette smokers is 0.9%, Dagestan - 2.2%, Khakassia - 3.6%, Kabardino-Balkaria - 4.7%, Buryatia - 5% and Kurgan region - 5.5%.
"We see that vapes and tobacco heating devices are steadily increasing in popularity among the population. So, over the past two years, the number of consumers of "electronok" has grown by almost a quarter, that's a million people. Consumption of traditional tobacco products, on the contrary, is decreasing - in the same two years, the number of "classic" smokers has decreased by 2% or half a million less. If earlier, at least since pre-2019, the proportion of the nicotine-dependent population has consistently decreased due to its main part - tobacco users, then in 2024 the number of smokers of all types has increased in total. This happened at the expense of consumers of electronic smoking devices," said Elena Trubnikova, President of FinExpertiza.
It is specified that in 2024, the total proportion of nicotine-dependent citizens, including cigarette smokers, electronic device users, and consumers of non-smoking tobacco products, increased from 21.1% to 22.2%. In the study, e-cigarettes include vapes, as well as electronic tobacco heating systems. The calculations are based on Rosstat data on the prevalence of smoking among the Russian population, provided by the FinExpertiza analytical service.
